Courier Service from Mumbai to South Africa, Picked Up at Your Door

South Africa is home to more than 1.5 million people of Indian origin, the largest Indian community in Africa, most of them in KwaZulu-Natal around Durban and in Gauteng around Johannesburg. Many have family in Gujarat and Maharashtra, so parcels move between Mumbai and South Africa all year: Diwali and Eid gifts, sarees and kurtas, spices and sweets, documents for study and work, and stock for Indian businesses. Our courier service from Mumbai to South Africa covers the whole route. We collect from your address in Mumbai, prepare the export paperwork, fly the shipment to Johannesburg and coordinate clearance with South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs until it reaches the recipient.

South Africa is a long flight from India, and its customs rules on VAT, gifts and medicines are specific. We explain what applies to your parcel before pickup, so the recipient is not surprised by a charge at the door.

Mumbai to South Africa Courier Delivery Time

Online, you will see India to South Africa times from a few days to two weeks. For a correctly documented parcel, plan on the following.

Service Typical transit* Best for
Express 4–6 working days Documents, urgent parcels, samples
Standard 8–12 working days Gifts, clothes, planned shipments
Air freight cargo Quoted per shipment Heavy, bulk or commercial consignments

*Indicative, counted from pickup. Customs inspection, missing paperwork, public holidays and remote addresses can add time. Parcels with medicines, food or plant products can wait up to 48 working hours for inspection by the relevant authority.

What Can You Send from Mumbai to South Africa?

  • Gifts and festive parcels: Diwali sweets, clothes, decorations and keepsakes for family. Our guide to the best courier for sending Diwali gifts abroad covers timing and packing.
  • Clothes and textiles: sarees, kurtas, lehengas and fabrics for family, boutiques and traders. Declare true values, because clothing is among the more heavily dutied goods in South Africa.
  • Documents: degree and experience certificates, visa and immigration papers, contracts and bank documents.
  • Food from home: sealed, packaged, shelf-stable snacks, spices, tea and dry sweets in personal quantities. Meat, dairy, fresh produce, seeds and plant material need permits or are not allowed.
  • Medicines: prescription medicine for the recipient’s own use, with the prescription (see below).
  • Jewellery and handicrafts: declare values accurately and pack them securely.
  • Business shipments: samples, garments, spare parts and online orders, with a commercial invoice and packing list.

For presents, our gifts courier service page explains how we handle wrapping, fragile items and festival deadlines.

South Africa Customs, VAT and Documents

South Africa charges 15% VAT on imports, and customs duty depends on the type of goods. The old concession for parcels under R500 no longer exempts them from VAT, which SARS added from September 2024. SARS also allows two unsolicited gift parcels per person each calendar year with a duty rebate, each valued at no more than R1,400, but wine, spirits, tobacco and perfume are excluded. If a parcel is worth more, charges apply to the full value. Read the official rules on sending or receiving goods in the post on the SARS website. Thresholds change, so we confirm what applies to your parcel when you book.

Shipment type Typically required
Personal parcels and gifts Sender’s photo ID and address proof; itemised contents with values; recipient’s full name, South Africa address with postal code and mobile number
Documents Sender’s ID; recipient’s name, full address and phone number
Commercial goods Commercial invoice, packing list, IEC, GSTIN and export clearance details; the consignee’s customs client number with SARS; permits for regulated goods
Medicines Doctor’s prescription, original packs and generic names; SAHPRA authorisation for controlled drugs

South African customs checks the declared value against the contents, so keep an invoice for new items and describe each one clearly. Our guide on international shipping costs, timelines and tips explains how duty and VAT fit into the total cost.

Courier Charges from India to South Africa

There is no single per-kg rate for India to South Africa. The price depends on chargeable weight (the higher of actual and volumetric weight, length × width × height in cm ÷ 5,000), the service you choose, the contents and the delivery area. We quote before pickup. Pack in a snug box, combine items into one shipment and choose Standard if you can wait. Our guide on packing fragile items for long-distance shipping shows how to protect gifts and glassware on the long flight. The recipient may also pay VAT and duty at delivery, so we tell you what to expect.

Delivery Across South Africa

We deliver across South Africa, including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Sandton, Centurion, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Cape Town and Gqeberha. Shipments arrive through O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and continue with local delivery partners to the door.

Address tip: include the street number and name, suburb, city and the four-digit postal code, plus a mobile number. For gated estates and complexes, add the complex name, unit number and any access instructions, because couriers often cannot enter without them. Remote and rural addresses take longer.

There is no single per-kg rate. The price depends on chargeable weight, service level, contents and delivery area. Send us the details and we quote before pickup.
